Use Gmail for your Domain's Webmail
From Hostbaby Wiki
Google now has a feature that will let you host your domain name's email on their servers and give you access to it through their own gmail webmail interface (which we know some of you like a lot better than our webmail). This basically means you can host your domain's email at gmail while keeping your web site hosted with us. You can find more details (and sign-up for it) here: https://www.google.com/hosted
But before you jump right in, there are a few downsides to doing this you should be aware of:
- they give you a specific GB limit per user account (we have no hard limit), although they'll probably raise this limit as the years go by
- the regular gmail attachment size limits still apply.. you can send OR receive emails NO BIGGER THAN 20MB, which translates to an attachment size limit between 16MB and 20MB, depending on the type of file (our webmail limits the attachment size to 30MB, although there's no hard limit if you send via an email program)
- the maximum recipients limits still apply.. you can send to no more than 500 addresses per email (we have no such limit)
- you'll still see the regular gmail/google advertisements in your mails (the kind where they show ads based on the *content* of the mail)
They now offer "Premier Edition" email hosting for $50/account/year where they up your quota to 25GB/account and get rid of the ads (the other stuff still applies.)
If you sign up and you're approved, google will send you some instructions telling you to login to your admin account and set up your accounts/usernames @ your domain, and once those accounts are set up, they'll say you need to change your domain name's MX DNS records.. just send us the info (server names) they tell you to change them to, and we'll set ya up.
P.S. this shouldn't affect sending out your mailing list mails through Listbaby at all.
To access where you add your email address for Gmail to use, go to your settings. In there you'll want to go to "Accounts and Import". It will look like this:
Click on the button that says "Send mail from another address", and that will bring up a pop-up menu, like the one in the picture.
Enter the name you want going out to the people you're emailing as well as the email address from which you want to send; then click on 'Next Step" and it will take you to a screen that asks you if you want to send email through your SMTP - NO, send through Gmail.
It's easier and they won't have any problem with you doing it. Once you click on 'Next Step' there, it will need you to verify that you're authorized to email from that address. This is important, of course, because you wouldn't want just anyone sending from your email address, right? So click on 'Send Verification' to get that part rolling. It will send you a code that you'll need to enter in on the next screen.
Once the code is entered, you should be good to go! It will take you back in to your settings area of your Gmail account. This is an example of what it will look like once your domain email is authorized to send and receive via this account:
That should be all you need! You will now have a drop-down menu at the top of your 'Compose Email' screen that will allow you to choose what address you're sending from - this is what your recipient will see, and so long as you have selected to 'Reply from the same address the message was sent to' (in the Settings area, you can see it in the image above), you wont have to worry about anyone knowing that your email is coming through Gmail ^_^
